Telvin Smith says loss to Titans is on the defense

NFL: Tennessee Titans at Jacksonville Jaguars Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars defense allowed a total of 83 passing yards, nine points, and were on the field nearly six minutes longer than the offense — but linebacker Telvin Smith is going to shoulder the blame for a loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 3 and there’s no way to convince him otherwise.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Telvin wasn’t going to deflect any responsibility for the 9-6 loss. It’s on the defense to keep the other team from scoring more points than the offense. Period.

“You will have Sundays where a side will go out and play an awesome game. We didn’t have that. That happened in the Pittsburgh game last year. Everyone will come out and say the offense this and the offense that, but to me it’s the defense. The offense scored six. After they put up three, we should have stopped them. After they put up the second [field goal], that was another point for us that was a plus. At the end of the day, it’s on us. We say we are the best [defense] so we have to go out and be the best.”

I respect the personal accountability and not wanting to throw anyone under the bus, Telvin — but a touchdown at any point after the first quarter seals an ugly win for the Jaguars and gets y’all to 3-0 and two games up in the AFC South.

What do you think though? Should the defense be to blame just like the offense? Let us know in the comments below!
