Calais Campbell will be back with Jaguars in 2019

NFL: Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be bringing back All-Pro defensive end Calais Campbell in 2019, according to... well, Calais Campbell.

Campbell appeared on Action News Jax’s “All Access” show (as he does just about every Monday following a game) and he told the crowd that he was told he’d be returning in 2019.

That’s really good news.

We’ll have a more detailed breakdown on this later, but I actually think Campbell played better this year than he did last year when he earned All-Pro honors. It’s true that he didn’t have as many sacks — 10.5 this season vs. 14.5 last season — but that’s largely because of the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts who allowed Campbell to stockpile 9.0 of them in just four games last season.

The Texans allowed an abysmal 54 sacks in 2017. The Colts allowed 56. For comparison’s sake, the Jaguars this year allowed 53.

This year, Campbell’s production was a lot more spread out, registering at least a sack in nine of 16 games and sacks in each of his final three games. For comparison’s sake, he didn’t register a sack after Week 15 last year and that includes the playoffs.

All in all, it’s great news that Campbell is back.
