Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New Orleans Saints: Week 6 sack analysis

Jawaan Taylor had a tough time with Cam Jordan.

The Jacksonville Jaguars offense was abysmal last week against the New Orleans Saints, specifically sixth round rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew looked like... well... a sixth round rookie quarterback.

His offensive line didn’t fare very well either, allowing two sacks on 29 pass attempts and just 3.1 yards per carry on the ground

So who was responsible for both of those sacks? Let’s take a look.

Sack #1: 2nd & 10 at JAX 29, 0:26 in 2Q

(Shotgun) G. Minshew sacked at JAX 21 for -8 yards (C. Jordan)

This is at the end of the first half with the game tied 3-3. The Jaguars were obviously looking for quite a big gain to get them closer to a field goal and a halftime lead. As you can see all the receivers ran routes that took them 15-20 yards downfield.

In this situation, Jawaan Taylor has to hold his block a little longer to give Gardner Minshew and the receivers time to get far enough downfield. I don’t know what Leonard Fournette’s pass protection assignment is on this play, but it looks like he’s staying focused on helping the interior. That means it’s Taylor’s job to hold the block and he just doesn’t get it done.

Fault: Jawaan Taylor

Sack #2: 3rd & 10 at NO 10, 3:56 IN 3Q

(Shotgun) G. Minshew sacked at NO 14 for -4 yards (C. Jordan)

Jawaan Taylor gets shoved out of the way by a bull rushing Jawaan Taylor and Gardner Minshew is almost immediately on the run to his left. I would have liked to have seen tight end Seth DeValve help in this situation on Minshew’s blind side as it looks like his primary and secondary reads are to the left side of the field. A route to the left by DeValve is a lot less valuable than helping to seal off that side of the line. But as the play looks to be called, it’s Taylor’s responsibility once again.

Fault: Jawaan Taylor

Summary

It was a day to forget for almost everyone on the offensive side of the ball.
