Big Cat Country Q&A: What has changed about the Gardner Minshew quarterback situation?

Let’s answer some questions after a disappointing Jacksonville Jaguars loss to the Houston Texans in London!

Brandon from Rochester, NY

Q: Does Gardner Minshew start Week 1 next year?

A: That’s a great question and it deserves a longer piece (which I’ll have later in the week) but my knee jerk reaction is yes. Nick Foles has a chance to win the starting job for 2020 but I just don’t see him getting more than the four wins that Gardner Minshew got in the first half of the season. I think they finish 7-9 or 8-8 and they stick with Minshew going forward, meaning they’ll try as hard as they can to trade Foles in the offseason.

Shane from Jacksonville, FL

Q: What do I do now? Can Gardner Minshew still be the answer despite throwing two picks and fumbling twice? I’m willing to chop that up to him desperately trying to make something happen down 16 points in garbage time. What is the meaning of life?

A: What you do now is watch what Foles can do for this team. I expect three or four wins the rest of the season. I also expect Foles to be neck and neck with Minshew in terms of production. Minshew had zero offseason preparation and still got this team to 4-5 before the bye week, which is one game off where I thought they’d be before the season opener... and that was with Foles as the quarterback! And the meaning of life is to act justly, love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Frankie from Jacksonville, FL

Q: We always said Gardner Minshew needed to keep the boat afloat until Nick Foles got back. He’s done that with a 4-4 starting record. What has changed in the interim?

A: The only thing that’s changed is the timing of Minshew’s worst possible performance. Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the mouth and this coaching staff got punched in the mouth yesterday. If they can compartmentalize yesterday’s loss and admit that Foles isn’t an upgrade over Minshew, but rather will lead to the same number of wins, then they’ll do the right thing and keep Minshew in as the starter. But I don’t think they’ll do that.

Kevin from Charleston, SC

Q: Did you see the Jaguars finishing 7-9, 8-8, 9-7, 10-6 or 11-5?

A: 7-9 with a chance to get to 8-8 if they can sneak a win over the Los Angeles Chargers at home.

Logan from Davenport, FL

Q: Was the offensive performance yesterday more Gardner Minshew’s or John DeFilippo’s fault?

A: Yes? Minshew was not good yesterday and DeFilippo had some of the worst offensive play calling I’ve ever seen. It’s a chicken and the egg thing.

Devin from Jacksonville, FL

Q: When does Doug Marrone get fired?

A: When there’s a front office change. I don’t see either of those happening this offseason, but I’d keep Marrone and fire everyone in the front office. I think Marrone is coaching his ass off.

Jacari from Longview, TX

Q: Is A.J. Bouye our new No. 1 cornerback or just a temporary fix and is Tre Herndon starting next year?

A: Bouye is playing very, very well. I thought he’d be cut in the offseason but I’d run him back next year. As far as Herndon, he’s done enough to be the odds on favorite to be one of the top three cornerbacks in 2020. I think they draft a cornerback to be the No. 2 or the No. 3.
