Big Cat Country Q&A: If the Jaguars win out, could the front office keep their jobs?

NFL: Combine Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s answer some questions after another a come from behind Jacksonville Jaguars victory against the Oakland Raiders!

Keith from Jacksonville, FL

Q: Love the win, but my main concern is... What are the chances that this win, or a late season rally, convinces Shad Khan to keep the old regime for another year?

A: I wouldn’t worry about that, Keith.

Art from Drexel Hill, PA

Q: Why would you take a quarterback in this draft when you have so many holes on your roster? My plan would be to come back with Gardner Minshew, with the idea that if he’s good, then great. But if he isn’t the guy, we could go after Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields at the top of the draft next year.

A: I think Minshew has played more than well enough to warrant a look next year. Personally, I’d do exactly what you’re saying — give Minshew next season to see if he has what it takes with an entire offseason and 16 regular season games under his belt as the guy. But Minshew has some serious flaws, not the least of which are his turnovers and his inconsistency in throwing the middle or deep throws. If the team goes all in on a quarterback with a new front office regime this year, I wouldn’t be surprised. If the team goes all in on Minshew for 2020, I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s not a bad place to be in.

Chevin from Jacksonville, FL

Q: Tom Coughlin bought a championship-caliber roster twice with the Jaguars only to see it all collapse into salary cap purgatory. In between that, he won two Super Bowl titles with Ernie Accorsi and Jerry Reese rosters with the Giants. Tom Coughlin: bad personnel guy, good head coach?

A: Makes you think.

John from Sanford, FL

Q: Which Jaguars players do you think make the Pro Bowl?

A: Leonard Fournette is the only one who will get a serious nod. Josh Allen, Calais Campbell, and Yannick Ngakoue are fringe candidates who won’t make it but have played extraordinarily well.

James from Sullivan’s Island, SC

Q: What are the chances that we end up hiring Ron Rivera?

A: It’s going to be either him or Mike McCarthy.

John from Jacksonville Beach, FL

Q: I honestly thought Tom Coughlin would be back next year, but 25% of all the NFL’s grievances is jaw dropping. A stat which I hope makes Shad Khan give this entire front office the boot. Who’s on your short list to turn our franchise around?

A: I think you have to start with the front office. They will likely be the ones making the decision on a head coach. I like what the Dallas Cowboys have done with their roster. Poach someone from that staff.

Demetrius from Washington D.C.

Q: Do we go after a wide receiver in free agency?

A: Robby Anderson makes a ton of sense.

Jimmy from Gainesville, FL

Q: There have been reports that Shad Khan is going to clean house in a few weeks and both Tom Coughlin and Doug Marrone were mentioned but not David Caldwell. Why not?

A: There have been leaked, unconfirmed reports that Dave Caldwell liked Patrick Mahomes and Christian McCaffrey in the 2017 NFL Draft but was overruled by Tom Coughlin in picking them. I don’t think that’s true, but even if it is... who cares? Caldwell has made more than enough dumb personnel mistakes to warrant a firing years ago.

Dre from North Haven, CT

Q: Do you see Telvin Smith coming back if Tom Coughlin and Doug Marrone are fired?

A: No.
