Jaguars free agency rumors: Ryan Tannehill an option?

NFL: Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be searching for a new starting quarterback for the 2019 NFL season and most expect it to come in the form of signing former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles on Wednesday when free agency opens. There have been some reports of Jaguars interest in alternatives however, such as Teddy Bridgewater and now current Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

The Dolphins undoubtedly will be cutting quarterback Ryan Tannehill soon, barring a miracle that would include Tannehill accepting a massive and dramatic pay cut, which he most likely won’t.

With Tannehill poised to hit the open market for the first time in his career, it’s unclear where he’ll end up. However, there’s a noticeable buzz in league circles that he possibly could end up in Jacksonville.

It’s a bit weird the rumors about Ryan Tannehill suddenly cropped up, especially since he’s still under contract with the Miami Dolphins, though most expect that he will be released, saving the Dolphins just over $13 million in cap room. Most expect the Dolphins to “tank” the season and do a full rebuild, though there is some ancillary thought they could jump into the Nick Foles sweepstakes which currently includes only the Jaguars.

As far as the Jaguars are concerned, I think the Tannehill rumors are just additional buzz to check the price tag of Nick Foles. Last week there were rumors Foles could command something like over $20 million per year, but as I explained and given the market outlook, it’s hard to see Foles getting that much.

Personally I think Tannehill overall is better than Nick Foles, but recent history will probably make most people disagree with that. If you’re just looking for a short-term band-aid however, there are far worse options than Tannehill.
