2019 NFL mock draft: Jaguars pick T.J. Hockensen and Daniel Jones

NCAA Football: Senior Bowl Practice-North John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars are done with free agency and the 2019 NFL Draft is less than a month away, so you know what that means — MOCK DRAFTS EVERYWHERE.

That’s right, the only other chance the Jaguars have of rebuilding their offense and fine tuning their defense comes in about four weeks. Will Jacksonville go with a stud pass rusher at the top of the draft or will they devote their first few picks to the offensive side of the ball?

Dan Kadar of MockingTheDraft.com has some ideas in his latest two-round mock:

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa

Offseason needs: Offensive tackle, tight end, safety, guard

If you take the stance that Jacksonville’s offensive line is decent enough, and it sort of is, that opens up what the Jaguars can do at No. 7. They could add another high-level piece to a talented defense. Don’t forget, Jacksonville had the NFL’s best defense in 2017 according to DVOA. Or the Jags could find a reliable player on offense in Hockenson. The value of taking a tight end at seven can be argued, but Hockenson makes an impact on the whole offense.

I don’t hate the pick. Nick Foles has shown — as has just about every quarterback in the NFL — that a playmaker at tight end can drastically improve the passing game, even more so than a great receiver. If you have a great tight end he will win matchups that defenses are less prepared for.

If Hockensen is the pick, so be it. But don’t be surprised if this pick is a defensive lineman like Brian Burns or Josh Allen. They are currently sitting pretty well at three of their four defensive line positions in Calais Campbell, Taven Bryan, and Yannick Ngakoue. Another pass rusher opposite Ngakoue could make a great defense even greater.

38. Jacksonville Jaguars: Daniel Jones, QB, Duke

Oh sweet Christ, no.

Daniel Jones ain’t good and picking a second-tier quarterback in the hopes he’ll defy expectations and challenge your high priced free agent pickup is another half measure in a sea of half measures by this Jacksonville front office.

If you’re reaching for a guy at the top of the second round, you’re doing it wrong. Dalton Risner and Chris Lindstrom are still on the board — go get one of them.

What do you think of these first two rounds? Would you like these picks or would you rather see them pick elsewhere? Let us know in the comments below!
