Some think that the Jacksonville Jaguars could move on from starting safety Tashaun Gipson this season in a cap relief move, however it seems like some teams have contacted the Jaguars about a potential trade for the veteran instead.
Teams have called the #Jaguars to inquire about starting S Tashaun Gipson, sources say, and the belief is he’s available. Due more than $8M and Jax is in a cap crunch, but Gipson has played at a high level and is only 28.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 6, 2019
Gipson, 28, has been a good player on the Jaguars defense since he was signed as a free agent in 2016 and some would argue has played at close to a Pro Bowl level. As mentioned the Jaguars are going to be moving on from some players to clear cap space and after the team re-signed Jarrod Wilson some thought that Gipson could be on the chopping block.
I mentioned before at the end of the season Gipson could end up being an “example cut” for a team who is going to try to clean out some big personalities in the locker room. That’s not to say Gipson is a bad locker room guy, I don’t think that’s close to the case, but he has been one of the players who have been openly critical of some of the defensive play calling and schemes.
It will be interesting to see what the Jaguars could get for Gipson if they plan to move on.
