The Jacksonville Jaguars have selected Temple running back Ryquell Armstead in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The Jaguars added some running backs in free agency in the form of Alfred Blue, Thomas Rawls and Benny Cunningham but it’s clear they’re still looking to add to the position with the pick of Armstead.
Armstead isn’t the most elusive runner, but he’s slippery with good top end speed running a 4.45 40-yard dash at the 2019 NFL Combine. He’s a bigger down hill runner at 220 pounds with a knack for getting small and weaving his way through holes on the offensive line. Armstead does a nice job breaking tackles and keeping his legs churning to move the pile.
It sounds like Armstead will be viewed as a “like” backup to former first round pick Leonard Fournette, who has had a shaky start to his NFL career to put it mildly. The Jaguars were always going to be looking to add a rookie back at some point.
