Yannick Ngakoue on if he’ll get a new contract this summer: ‘My production speaks for itself.’

The Jacksonville Jaguars have something truly special in Yannick Ngakoue.

Not only has the former third round pick out of Maryland racked up 29.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles in his three years with the team, he’s never missed a game.

He’s a smart, physical, passionate, hard-working, team-first, leader who deserves a new contract. And he knows it too.

“My production speaks for itself at the end of the day,” Ngakoue said after Day 1 of OTAs yesterday. “That is really a question for the front office. I can’t control that. All I can control is me getting better each and every day ... I’m here to play ball. Let those guys handle it, the front office and my agent. He has experience doing those things and I have experience making plays on the field. That’s why I’m here.”

Rookie contracts are now structured based on draft slot. Because of his getting drafted No. 69 (nice) overall, he put pen to paper on a four-year, $3,480,587 deal back in 2016 when he was drafted.

But he’s played well past his contract and now that he’s in his fourth year, he’s eligible for a contract extension now — compiling 21.5 sacks and 23 tackles for a loss in his last two seasons.

Yannick wants to sign an extension, he wants to stay here. The Jaguars would be smart to offer an extension sooner rather than later, locking up a premier edge rusher as he enters his prime.

The only question is... will the Jaguars do the smart thing?
