The Jacksonville Jaguars report to training camp on Wednesday for the start of the 2019 NFL season, despite some players showing up in literal armored trucks, edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue will not be reporting with the rest of the team according to multiple reports. It comes as no surprise, as it was reported on Tuesday evening that negotiations had broken down and it was likely he would hold out.
Point blank, Ngakoue should not report to camp and should holdout until the Jaguars award him with a new long term contract. I still believe a deal is going to eventually get done and he might miss a week or two of training camp, but Ngakoue is exactly the type of player that franchises should be going out of their way to pay and keep. He was a home grown mid-round pick who has never missed a game and consistently been one of your better players week-in and week-out.
Over the past three seasons Ngakoue has netted 29.5 sacks and been top five in the NFL in quarterback pressures and hits. Players less productive and at the same position as Ngakoue have recently been handed $100 million plus contracts, so it’s no surprise that he is holding out for a big deal.
Hopefully, he gets it.
