Jaguars owner Shad Khan reportedly ‘wants to pay Jalen Ramsey’

The Jacksonville Jaguars have just had one of the craziest weeks I can remember.

Jalen Ramsey requests a trade, it becomes public, and he hosts one of the wildest press conferences I can imagine. As the team (led by a sixth round rookie quarterback making only his second career start) gears up for a Thursday Night Football matchup against the Tennessee Titans, Ramsey makes it abundantly clear he has issues with Tom Coughlin and the Jaguars front office — not the coaches, not the scheme, and not his teammates. Coughlin.

The Jaguars then go out and dominate the Titans. Like, really dominate. All three phases were humming. Gardner Minshew becomes an instant folk hero, making the rounds on national sports spots. And to top it all off, owner Shad Khan is reportedly making it known he loves Ramsey and wants to see him as the highest paid cornerback in the league.

What the hell is going on?

Khan has always been a very hands off owner when it comes to the inner workings of his football team. If the report is to be believed, this is the first time I can remember him stepping in during a dispute like this and taking sides.

And it’s not to be missed that the side Khan is taking is... Jalen’s. He wants to pay him. There is only one man in the building who can sign off on that.

I wonder if this is Khan telegraphing his not-so-subtle opinion to Coughlin that he needs to lay off the old man schtick and pay the players who have earned it. The Yannick Ngakoue saga this summer may have been the beginning of the end in Khan’s mind and it will be interesting to see where things go from here.
