Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Houston Texans: Week 5 sack analysis

This time there were four sacks. Let’s check it out!

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a golden opportunity to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat on Sunday. They were facing a Houston Texans defense that had struggled against the run so far this year. James Robinson is in the running for Offensive Rookie of the Year. It’s a match made in heaven!

56 Gardner Minshew passing plays later... we lost by three scores.

Oh yeah, and there were four sacks. Because that’s what happens when you call so many passing plays.

Who was responsible for them?

Let’s find out!

Sack #1: 3rd & 4 at JAX 42, 13:38 in 1Q

(Shotgun) G. Minshew II sacked at JAX 41 for -1 yards (Z. Cunningham).

Gardner Minshew tucks and runs too quickly here. He’s got to step up, yes, and maybe even scramble a couple of yards out of the pocket. But once he senses the rush he commits to running. If he’d just looked up after getting a few yards upfield and away from the rush, he might have seen Tyler Eifert over the middle.

Fault: Gardner Minshew

Sack #2: 2nd & 14 at JAX 36, 10:48 in 3Q

(Shotgun) G. Minshew II sacked at JAX 31 for -5 yards (W. Mercilus).

This is partly a coverage sack, but Cam Robinson has to hold his block a little longer than this — especially on a long second down.

Fault: Team

Sack #3: 4th & 1 at HOU 8, 3:21 in 3Q

Direct snap to J. Robinson. J. Robinson sacked at HST 14 for -6 yards. FUMBLES, touched at HST 12, RECOVERED by HST-J. Watt at HST 10.

No, I am not breaking down this play. And may God have mercy on your soul for having to watch it again.

Fault: Doug Marrone

Sack #4: 3rd & 15 at JAX 42, 6:27 in 4Q

(Shotgun) G. Minshew II sacked at JAX 40 for -2 yards (J. Martin). FUMBLES (J. Martin) [J. Martin], RECOVERED by HST-W. Mercilus at JAX 40. W. Mercilus to JAX 44 for -4 yards (T. Eifert). FUMBLES (T. Eifert), recovered by HST-T. Adams at JAX 34.

There are a few people at fault and I can’t pin it just on one guy — A.J. Cann gets outhustled by J.J. Watt and Gardner Minshew steps up a little too far once the pressure hits. That allows Whitney Mercilus a straight line between him and the quarterback, with Jawaan Taylor safely out of the way.

Fault: Team

I’m already tired.
