Happy Bobby Bonilla Day — a day we celebrate Bonilla cashing an annual check from the New York Mets for $1,193,248.20, something he’s done every July 1 from 2011 through 2035.

It got me thinking, who are the players the Jacksonville Jaguars are still paying despite them not being on the roster? Well, look no further!

So, why does Bonilla get paid? ESPN has a great run down here but in short the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9 million on Bonilla’s contract. But instead of paying Bonilla a lump sum they agreed to make annual payments starting in 2011.

Why would they do that? Well, Mets ownership was invested in a Bernie Madoff account that promised double-digit returns and through some fuzzy math the Mets were supposed to make even more money this way.

That did not happen.
