The Jacksonville Jaguars have quite a few needs on both sides of the ball and The Draft Network’s Trevor Sikkema knows it. His fourth mock draft went live today and he has this team picking their best chance at a franchise quarterback and beefing up their defensive backfield.
Here are Sikkema’s thoughts on who the Jaguars pick with either of their two first round picks in April.
Spoiler alert: I like it!
1. Jacksonville Jaguars
Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
There’s no need to overthink this. Lawrence is the pick.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars (from LAR)
Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU
This safety class got a bad rap early on and it seems like people just wrote it off. But make no mistake, there are a handful of impact safeties waiting to be selected in this class, Moehrig being the best of them. The Jaguars need a big upgrade on their back end, and Moehrig gives them the flexibility to play more man coverage on the outside with a very good single-high safety with excellent range and anticipation behind them.
As far as the first overall pick goes, yeah... Sikkema is right. The clickbait opinions of the major networks are only there to generate buzz. It’s Trevor Lawrence and everyone knows it.
Sikkema doesn’t have Christian Barmore going in the first round which is a bit odd. Nearly every other mock has him in the first round and most have him slotted to the Jaguars. While I like the idea of putting some draft capital towards upgrading our secondary, I have to imagine that beefing up the defensive line is a greater priority for Urban Meyer and Trent Baalke.
If Barmore is there, he’d be a solid addition to a defensive line that sorely needs talent at every position. As John Shipley pointed out earlier, quarterback is the greatest need on this roster but defensive tackle isn’t too far behind.
But all that said, it’s two picks, two positions of need, and two consensus opinions around the league that these are very good players. Sign me up.
