Day 2 Preview

Jags continue to have a lot of options at 33, 45, 65

QB Trevor Lawrence (1) and RB Travis Etienne (25) solidify elite playmaking ability out of the backfield in both the rushing and passing attack for the foreseeable future (and hopefully for the next decade). The first pick was a foregone conclusion, and the second pick makes a whole lot of sense if you studied Urban Meyer's history and did a deep dive on the RB position in this class.

I honestly hate gloaters, but this year I don't care anymore. I've mocked Etienne to JAX at 25 early and often, since March and in my final mock.

But Round 2 brings even more variables than Round 1. The top 5 QB's all went in the first round, but Kyle Trask is still on the board, as are Davis Mills and Kellen Mond, for teams possibly looking for an heir apparent or competition at the QB position (PIT, TAM, ATL, WFT, CAR, DEN). That means trade down possibilities for JAX, and/or Gardner Minshew trade possibilities. I'd honestly be surprised if there's not a Jags trade at some point in Day 2 (even if it's not out of the 33 slot).

Let's get to it.

Top Players to Watch (Day 2)

TREVON MOEHRIG (SAF, TCU)

One of the most commonly mocked players to the Jags at 25, Trevon Moehrig not only fills a need at safety to upgrade the secondary, but is also at the top of most boards right now (regardless of position).

CHRISTIAN BARMORE (DL, ALABAMA)

Moehrig and Barmore were 1-2 in Jags mocks at 25, but both remain available. I personally am not high on Barmore (motor, consistency, reported practice habits, and the Warren Sapp story) but he's definitely in play given his physical gifts. Maybe Joe Cullen can make the most of him?

JEREMIAH OWUSU-KORAMOAH (LB, NOTRE DAME)

An excellent college player and great fit as a 4-3 WILL, but I have to wonder if he's even on the Jags radar given what we envision for Joe Cullen's attack (and presence of Myles Jack).

ELIJAH MOORE (WR, OLE MISS)

With Kadarius Toney going before Elijah Moore, the Jags could target receiver at 33 or 45 to give Trevor yet another weapon (with an even higher ceiling than Toney). He'd immediately be an impact slot receiver to complement Shenault inside as a WR4 and develop as a reliable target for Trevor.

AZEEZ OJULARI (OLB, GEORGIA)

He doesn't have the length of a traditional 3-4 OLB (likely better as a 4-3 WILL also) but has the pass rush ability to be an immediate challenger to K'Lavon Chaisson and there's an old saying: you can never have enough pass rush.

RONDALE MOORE (WR, PURDUE)

I've been mocking him to the Jags quite often because he might round out the receiving corps more than any other prospect (Toney and E. Moore included). Elite YAC ability and seems like a great fit for what we envision the Urban and Bevell offense to look like - as a slot specialist who can turn quick and easy touches (jet sweeps, bubble screens, drag routes, slants) into home runs. He can return punts, he torched Urban's Buckeyes as a freshman, and has met with the Jags virtually over Zoom at least twice.

NICK BOLTON (LB, MISSOURI)

I'd assume it's unlikely given Joe Schobert and Myles Jack's presence...but James Robinson didn't stop Travis Etienne from being the pick at 25. Schobert wasn't an Urban or Cullen or Baalke guy, remember - this team is being rebuilt. Bolton could be the MIKE linebacker that pushes the defense into "Urban's image".

PAT FREIERMUTH (TE, PENN STATE)

"F" or "Move" TE is a positional need. Freiermuth may not be the pick given the other players available, but the closer we get to 45 (or even 65) then the more likely the top TE not named Kyle Pitts becomes.

ELIJAH MOLDEN (NICKEL / SAF, TCU)

This kid has a demeanor about him on the field that screams "Urban's image". Tough, smart, fast and physical - and likely has the skills to be either a nickel or sub-package safety.

CARLOS BASHAM, JR. (EDGE, WAKE FOREST)

Not a personal favorite (I think he's an early down 4-3 end only) but Urban Meyer and Joe Cullen clearly feel that the defensive line is important. He's probably on the radar.

JACKSON CARMAN (OL, CLEMSON)

Clemson trifecta? I suppose if you want Trevor to be comfortable, this makes sense. But to me he's an RG, and I don't see him being the pick even if we do go OL (Jenkins, Eichenberg, Dickerson)

LANDON DICKERSON (C, ALABAMA)

Speak of the devil - not a sexy pick, but big, strong, tough... could be Trevor's center for 10-15 years (if the Jags go in that direction). Remember: Linder is turning 30 with injuries and $0 dead cap going forward, and if you get an elite center - that's one position you can scratch off the needs list for 10-15 years (Jeff Saturday was Peyton's center for 13 seasons in Indianapolis).

ALIM MCNEILL (DT, NC STATE)

My favorite DT in class - even above Barmore - and to me the most likely selection at #65 if available. 3-4 nose with pass rush ability and 3-down value. He's only 20 years old and hasn't even scratched the surface of what he's capable of.

AMARI RODGERS (WR, CLEMSON)

If you want to run 10 / 11 personnel Spread concepts, it's hard to make Trevor more comfortable than putting his college teammates in the backfield and in the slot. The RPO game would be tops in the league in a hurry given their skills and comfort level. Imagine this gem on 1st & 10: Trevor has read option with Travis, and Amari is running bubble on the read side for your modern-day version of the triple option? See ACC Championship Game vs. Notre Dame - this trio already runs this to perfection.

Other Dudes

  • Joseph Assai (EDGE, Texas)
  • Terrace Marshall (WR, LSU)
  • Asante Samuel, Jr. (CB, FSU)
  • Teven Jenkins (OL, Oklahoma St.)
  • Dillon Radunz (OT, North Dakota St.)
  • Samuel Cosmi (OT, Texas)
  • Richie Grant (SAF, TCU)
  • Jevon Holland (CB/SAF, Oregon)
  • Liam Eichenberg (OT, Notre Dame)
  • Walker Little (OT, Stanford)

Updated Mock (Day 2)

33 - TREVON MOEHRIG (SAF, TCU)

I heard Urban slip briefly and mention safety in his presser. Moehrig is at or near the top of most boards, and fills a positional need.

45 - RONDALE MOORE (WR, PURDUE)

A perfect fit for the offense to round out the receiving corps: a fast offensive weapon with YAC wiggle from the slot. If Moore is gone then I like Pat Freiermuth (TE, Penn State) here.

65 - ALIM MCNEILL (DT, NC STATE)

High School RB and LB and a baseball player, this 20-year-old athlete hasn't even scratched the surface of what he's capable. 2 years under Cullen and I think he's your starting 3-4 nose with 3-down value and pass rush ability,

Conclusion

We have a lot of good options on Day 2. Day 1 was a success in my book - regardless of your personal feelings about taking RB in Round 1. We now have the best backfield (Lawrence, Etienne, Robinson) since either the 2007 season (Garrard, Taylor, MJD) or 1999 season (Brunell, Taylor, Stewart). By the way, those are two of the best seasons in franchise history. This backfield in my opinion could end up the best in franchise history during Year 3 of Urban Renewal in 2023.

On Day 2 of this draft, we can simply take the best players available and there are several to choose from starting with the very first pick at 33 (Moehrig, Barmore, Elijah Moore, Rondale Moore, etc.).

I'll defer to "Urban's image". He does have 3 national titles and an .853 career winning percentage after all. Go Jags.
