The Jaguars had the opening pick of the fourth round and selected Jay Tufele, a defensive tackle from USC. Tufele opted out of the 2020 college football season, but in 2019 Tufele had 4.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. Tufele is 6’3 and 315 pounds but moves very light on his feet for someone his size.
Tufele, the Utah native, is an explosive interior rusher who has the power to defend against the run, while also being an effective pass rusher from the interior. The Jaguars needed explosiveness along the defensive front, with the Taven Bryan Experience being something both teams might want to move on from. They added Roy Robertson-Harris and Malcolm Brown in the offseason, but neither have the explosiveness and pass rushing potential that Tufele has.
Someone with Tufele’s pedigree and athleticism normally doesn’t fall to the fourth round, and the Jaguars picked him up to potentially be the starting defensive tackle and add some pressure.
