Wave goodbye to pre-season MVP Nathan Rourke. The Canadian sensation has been claimed by the New England Patriots.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have lost pre-season standout, and former Canadian Football League star quarterback Nathaniel Rourke to the New England Patriots, as Rourke was claimed on waivers by New England.

Signed this offseason to compete with CJ Beathard for the backup QB role, after a very promising preseason Rourke has spent the majority of the season on the Jaguars' practice squad.

Throughout multiple times this season, due to injury, the Jaguars have elevated Rourke to the active roster or placed him as the emergency third quarterback. However, once that immediate week of spot duty passed he would normally revert to the waiver wire, subsequently clear waivers, and then re-sign back onto the team's practice squad. This week, Rourke was listed as the emergency third quarterback but waived to make room for Jamal Agnew, with the team hoping to re-sign him back to the practice squad.

Unfortunately, with the Patriots being out of playoff contention and also losing their practice squad QB to the Chargers, the ripple effect impacted the Jags. Rourke will be signed to New England's active roster and they will claim his current contract. With only Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones on the roster and the team out of contention, this may be a great opportunity for Nathan to get playing time. New England could also be stashing assets for the future by taking a flier on the former CFL star.

Nathan previously spent a few seasons as the starting QB for the Canadian Football League (CFL) BC Lions, where in 2022 Rourke broke the CFL record for completion percentage (78.7%). That season earned him the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian (MVP) award despite missing half the season.

With Trevor Lawrence currently in the concussion protocol and CJ Beathard listed as the only other quarterback on the Jaguars roster, the team will likely need to make another roster move this week.

Maple-Minshew, you will be missed.

Update:

Perry may be a familiar name to some, as he spent time on the 2022 Jaguars practice squad and preseason roster. He should have some familiarity with the playbook and system.
