The Jacksonville Jaguars have again received positive injury news on quarterback Trevor Lawrence, as the team has announced that his shoulder injury from Sunday's Tampa Bay Buccaneers loss was diagnosed as a right shoulder AC sprain, after evaluation and imaging from the medical staff.
Trevor Lawrence is “better today” according to Doug Pederson. AC shoulder sprain officially. Probably won’t practice tomorrow.— Sam Kouvaris (@samkouvaris) December 26, 2023
Per coach Pederson:
We know this game is a physical and it is a tough, violent sport, and injuries are going to happen and especially to the quarterback position. All of the injuries that he has sustained are all hits, all contact stuff, and it is part of it. And that is his style and that is his aggressiveness, and he has been fortunate enough to bounce back from all of them. So we will see as he goes this week where he is at, but we have been fortunate that he has been able to be available every week so far.
The recovery time for an AC sprain can vary, depending on the grade of the sprain, unfortunately. For lower-grade injuries, players can often play through the injury with additional shoulder protection and medication the following week.
Based on past similar injuries, a grade one sprain recovery can typically be anywhere from one to three weeks (Mark Andrews, Sam Bradford, etc), whereas a grade two sprain can be in the three to six-week timeframe (Derek Carr, Jameis Winston, Justin Jefferson). However, that can also vary, based on the player's position as this injury is to Trevor's throwing shoulder and additional protection may impact his throwing.
With the unknown timetable for Trevor's recovery, the team also announced the signing of veteran quarterback Matt Barkley, off the New York Giants practice squad. In a corresponding move, the team placed standout core special teamer and backup safety Daniel Thomas on IR due to a broken forearm.

Additionally, we have placed S Daniel Thomas on the reserve/injured list.https://t.co/FmivwZlSAx
Barkley would look to be an insurance addition to the backup QB role, while the team awaits further clarity on Lawrence’s practice and playing status for this week.
The Jaguars have signed veteran QB Matt Barkley from the NY Giants' practice squad with Trevor Lawrence's status for this week unclear. Barkley hasn't played a snap since 2020 and is 2-5 as a starter. Would be the backup to CJ Beathard.— Michael DiRocco (@ESPNdirocco) December 26, 2023
Barkley previously played in Philadelphia with Press Taylor, who was a quality control coach in 2013 and 2014. He also played with WR coach Chad Hall who was an offensive assistant in 2018 in Buffalo and the WR coach in Barkley's 2022 season with the Bills.
