The Jacksonville Jaguars were largely up to the task of dealing with a Houston Texans defensive line that, even with J.J. Watt’s absence, has some playmakers and is relatively well-coached and well-schemed.

Who was responsible for each sack on Sunday? Let's get to it.

Sack #1: 3rd-and-3 at JAX 17, 6:20 left in 1Q

This is a really well-designed stunt by the Texans and Jadeveon Clowney. The right guard, A.J. Cann, gets sucked inside and loses his balance. That allows Clowney to get to Blake Bortles before he can finish his second read.

Verdict: A.J. Cann

Sack #2: 3rd and 6 at HOU 21, 12:11 left in 2Q

Another great stunt by the Texans. The center and left guard — Brandon Linder and Josh Wells — just completely collapse and force Bortles to run for it after seeing nothing in coverage. I think Bortles could have some blame in this because I don’t trust his ability to read the field after the shit hits the fan, but the All-22 shows the Texans in decent coverage with Bryan Walters over the middle as the best option. (And if Bryan Walters is your best option, you’re in trouble.)

T.J. Yeldon is along the left sideline, Bryan Walters is over the middle, Neal Sterling is running into double coverage towards the sideline, Marqise Lee is on the far left, and Allen Robinson is locked up with a defender on the goal line. There’s nowhere decent to go with the ball.

For the last few weeks, there have been rumors of mutual interest between the Jaguars and Tom Coughlin and those rumors were confirmed less than 24 hours after Gus Bradley was fired after going 14-48 in just under four seasons.

In 20 seasons, Coughlin has averaged 8.5 wins per year — 3.5 wins better than Bradley’s best season. He ranks 14th all-time in the NFL in wins.

You have to consider if Coughlin would want to build the Jaguars again. Would he want to risk tarnishing his legacy? Coughlin is revered in Jacksonville for what he did with the franchise when it was in its infancy. Does he want to risk ruining that if he comes back and it doesn’t work? Is it worth the risk of his legacy to come back and try again, especially considering his potential career remaining time frame?

With Coughlin reportedly reaching out to Bradley this year and offering his services as a coaching consultant, the answer seems to be more yes than no.

There’s also one big reason why it might not be. It appears that general manager Dave Caldwell will be retained at least through 2017 -- owner Shad Khan said Caldwell will be "charged with exploring all options to hire the best head coach possible" -- and that the Jaguars will stick with quarterback Blake Bortles. This will make some candidates think twice about taking the job.

Potential head coaching replacements for Jacksonville Jaguars after Gus Bradley - BigCatCountry.com
The Gus Bradley era in Jacksonville is over. Bradley was relieved of his duties after the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 21-20 loss to the Houston Texans. His career record as head coach ends at 14-48 — that’s a .226 career winning percentage. I’ve been critical of Bradley in the past, as many of you know. However, due to the kind of guy Bradley is as a person, I wish him the best in his future endeavors. Although there are still two weeks left in the season, I’m sure the Jaguars are already doing their homework on searching for a new head coach for the future. Here are some guys I think the team should reach out to.

The Jaguars fired head coach Gus Bradley following a 21-20 loss to the Houston Texans. It was a long time coming and players admitted after the firing that it was an anticipated move in the locker room. At 2-12, the Jaguars haven't won a game at EverBank Field in a year and haven't won more than five games in a season since 2010.

The Jacksonville Jaguars went to play the Houston Texans on Sunday hoping to play spoiler once again, and also beat Bill O'Brien for the first time ever. Instead they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory (again) and fell to 2-12.

The game started out about how one would think a Jaguars vs. Texans game would, with five consecutive drives that ended in punts. The Jaguars were finally able to put a good drive together on their third of the day, as they notched a field goal from Jason Myers to cap off a 11-play, 56-yard drive to give them a 3-0 lead.

The demise of Brock Osweiler would start to begin, as Osweiler threw an interception to Jalen Ramsey on an overthrow to Will Fuller. Ramsey would return it 35 yards to the Texans 25-yard line, as he recorded his first interception as a professional.

The Jaguars would go backwards on the next drive, as they lost seven yards, but would once again settle for a field goal, this one of the 50-yard variety to give he Jaguars a 6-0 lead.

Osweiler would throw his final pass of the day the next drive, as a pressure from Malik Jackson forced him to step up in the pocket, and throw a pass right into coverage to linebacker Telvin Smith, giving the Jaguars the ball at the Texans 37-yard line.

The Jaguars would take advantage of their second straight interception, as a defensive pass interference penalty near the goal line on A.J. Bouye would set the Jaguars up at the two-yard line. Bortles would run it in the end zone on second down, stretching the Jaguars lead to 13-0.

The Texans would proceed to bench Brock Osweiler the next drive, ending the $72 million dollar quarterback's day. Tom Savage would come into replace him, as he did well on his first drive, leading the Texans all the way to the goal line.

In one of the weirder plays of the year, Akeem Hunt would run it up the middle, fumbling right before he got across into the end zone. The ball would roll around for a few seconds without anyone noticing, before Hunt and two Jaguars players attempted to jump on the ball. The ruling on the field would end up concluding that because there was no clear recovery, the ball would go back to the half yard line.

The Jaguars would stuff the Texans on third-and-inches from the goal line, then Ramsey would make a tremendous play on the ball on a fade on fourth down, creating a turnover on downs.

The Jaguars would proceed to go three and out the next drive, then allow safety on a punt due to a holding call in the end zone against Neal Sterling. This would give the Texans their first points of the game and the ball, cutting the lead to 13-2.

With decent field position on their next drive, the Texans would use a six-play, 40-yard drive to notch another three points, as Nick Novak would make a 39-yard field goal to set the score at 13-5.

The Jaguars would start the second half with the ball, hoping to extend their lead with a good drive. Unfortunately, they would fall short after six plays, punting it back to the Texans. The Texans would follow up with a nine-play, 57-yard drive that would end on another field goal form Nick Novak, this one from 45 yards to notch the score at 13-8.

Following the touchdown, the Jaguars would make a historic play, as Marqise Lee took the kickoff to the house on a 100 yard kickoff return. This would be the first kickoff return the Jaguars have had since Maurice Jones-Drew did it in 2007. Myers would make the extra point, as the Jaguars extended their lead to 20-8.

The Texans would once again respond with a field goal on a nine-play, 45-yard drive which ended in a 43-yard Novak field goal. This would cut the Jaguars lead to 20-11.

The Jaguars started the next drive hoping to burn some clock, or even put the game out of reach. However, their offense would sputter on the drive, as they were forced into a three and out.

Despite a few excellent plays by Jalen Ramsey on the Texans next drive, the Texans would go down the field once again, to do what they have all game long. The Texans would settle for a field goal after their 14-play, 58-yard drive was stalled. The Texans would cut the lead to 20-14, and put them one score away.

What would the Jaguars offense do on the next drive? Well if you guessed three and out, you were correct. The Jaguars offense went backward with a holding call, a 2 yard loss on a T.J. Yeldon run, and a incomplete pass to Ben Koyack which he didn't even notice was coming his way.

The Texans would follow up the Jaguars blunders with their best drive of the day, which included a couple of good throws from Tom Savage while under pressure. The Texans would cap off the drive with a one-yard run by Lamar Miller, the Texans first touchdown of the day, as they took a 21-20 lead.

The Jaguars offense would fold once again, as they turned it over on downs as Bortles desperately attempted to get the ball away, but threw it to no one. They would stop the Texans on the next drive, forcing them to punt, giving the Jaguars the ball on their own seven-yard line with 1:10 left, and a chance to win the game one more time.

The game could not have ended on a more appropriate note, as Bortles threw an interception into coverage to Quinton Demps, who would slide down, and allow the Texans to go into victory formation and win the game.

The Jaguars would fall to the Texans 21-20, and lose their ninth straight game of the year.

Thanks to the fine folks at Battle Red Blog for discussing the upcoming Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Houston Texans game with us!

1. The Texans have a winning record and are tied for the AFC South lead... but they have a -45 point differential. What in the world?

We have no idea how to explain this. Seriously, we got nothing. I mean, we'll take the wins of course, but this is bizarre to say the least. The offense (outside of Lamar Miller) is completely inept, so really the only thing keeping the Texans alive right now is their J.J. Watt-less defense. Kevin Johnson (Houston's best corner) is also on injured reserve, and Jadeveon Clowney is not exactly 100 percent either. Hell, Johnathan Joseph (Houston's other boundary corner) missed last week's game against the Colts with a rib injury as well, and yet they still went out there and dominated Andrew Luck as a unit from start to finish. If Romeo Crennel is not in the running for assistant coach of the year, then this whole award is a farce. His scheming is literally the only thing holding this ball club together.

2. What are your thoughts on how general manager Rick Smith has built this team? From the outside looking in, the team looks good except for the most important position at quarterback. How do Texans fan feel about Brock Osweiler?

Smith has a reputation for knocking first round picks out of the park (the Texans are the only team in the NFL with every first rounder from the last nine seasons on their roster), but for every big hit he has a colossal miss to offset it. Every DeAndre Hopkins pick has an equal and opposite Sam Montgomery, and every Jadeveon Clowney pick has a Louis Nix. Hell, this is the same GM who let Glover Quin - one of the premiere young safety talents in the league at the time - walk to Detroit on a cheap contract just so that he could bring in the corpse of Ed Reed, who did not even last a full season here. The Texans are still trying to replace Quin years later, by the way. As awesome as ole' Slick Rick is on the first day of the draft, his maddening inconsistency in every other facet of GM'ing a professional football team has earned him a lot of justified criticism. Are there worse people building rosters in the NFL right now? Of course. Would I consider Smith to be in the upper echelon of GM's? Not a chance. He's squarely in the middle of the road, which seems to be enough to stay employed for now.

3. If you were the Jaguars coordinators, how would you game plan against either side of the ball for the Texans?

If I'm the Jaguars offensive coordinator, I just run it anywhere that Jadeveon Clowney is not lined up. Despite Clowney being an unbelievable force on early downs, he is still only one player out of eleven. The rest of the unit has struggled to keep running backs in check from time to time, though their interior run defense has improved a bit as the year has gone on. With this defense even more banged up than it was earlier in the season, there is a legitimate chance that we see Chris Ivory rip off some strong runs inside.

As for Jacksonville's defensive plans, just load the box to stop Lamar Miller and make Brock Osweiler beat you through the air. That's pretty much it. If you can stop the run game, you can stop this offense.

4. Is there a Jaguars player on either side of the ball that you say, "If the Texans don't stop him, we're in trouble"?

Probably Allen Robinson. He's had a very down year statistically as both Blake Bortles and the rest of the offense took a step back, but he's still easily one of the most physically imposing pass catchers in the NFL. The moment you discount his capabilities is the moment he goes for 9 catches, 107 yards, and a touchdown...oh wait, he already did do that against Houston this season in his only 100-yard outing of the year. He must really hate Bill O'Brien for passing on him in the draft or something.

5. What's gonna happen on Sunday? Will the Jaguars lose by multiple scores? Will they keep it close? Is there any chance of an upset?

It will probably be a close game as most AFC South contests tend to be, but I still do think that the Texans win this one. Jacksonville has more appreciable talent than Houston in my opinion, but Gus Bradley just can never figure out how to get the most out of them. For now, that lack of coaching acumen might be all the Texans need to get this win. Houston wins 20-16.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a 28.7 percent chance of beating the Houston Texans, according to numberFire, which sounds like way too high of a probability for a team on the road playing a division game against the first-place club.

Like I said, I don’t blame numberFire for giving us a one-in-four shot at winning the game. Frankly, it could be even lower and I’d get it. The Texans are 7-6, playing at home, and playing for every win they can get what with being tied for first place.

What do you think? Is 28.7 percent too much of a chance for the Jaguars to win? Is it too little? Let us know in the comments below.
