Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew avoided misdemeanor battery charges stemming from a fight at The Conch House in St. Augustine, Fla. over Memorial Day weekend. Jones-Drew allegedly punched a security guard in the face, knocking him unconscious and the left the scene before police could arrive.

It's clear from the video why the case was dropped by the State Attorney's office, as you can't really see much going on other than security guards and/or bouncers of The Conch House trying to restrain someone and Maurice Jones-Drew talking a bit and walking away. There is no clear evidence a punch was thrown by Jones-Drew.

The state attorneys office has decided against pursuing charges against the Jaguars running back, which means outside of a potential civil trial, but Jones-Drew can now move on without having to deal with the legal battle during the offseason. This does not necessarily mean there was an out-of-court settlement on the case, it means the state attorney's office didn't feel there was enough evidence to pursue a charge.

Jones-Drew was accused of punching a security guard at The Conch House restaurant after the security guard allegedly got Jones-Drew's friend in a headlock. Jones-Drew left the scene prior to law enforcement arriving and was not immediately charged with misdemeanor battery.

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew met with the media on Monday to discuss his situation regarding allegedly battery in a St. Augustine restaurant a few weeks ago, but to no one's surprise didn't say much of anything about it. Jones-Drew's lawyer smartly directed his client to not comment on his legal situation, but the Jaguars running back did talk about things like his injury and being disappointed in being a distraction to his team.

"It's an unfortunate situation," Jones-Drew said at his press conference on Monday. "Through my career, I've tried to stay out of the media in [a negative] light and as a distraction to this team."

Jones-Drew shouldn't be disappointed in being a distraction for the Jaguars however, because he's not. The only thing Jones-Drew is a distraction to is himself.

The Jaguars roster isn't being hammered with questions about Jones-Drew's situation. The coaching staff is asked about it, but other than that it's not really a thought during practice that Jones-Drew isn't even at, nor would he be at even if he was healthy.

The only thing Jones-Drew's situation offers is a distraction to is his rehab. The Jaguars running back is coming back from a foot injury that sidelined him last season, and his situation takes away his focus from getting healthy and getting back into shape.

It's only a distraction, because he made it one.

Jones-Drew couldn't speak of the specifics of an incident in late May, but did speak of his conditioning.

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew spoke to the media in a press conference on Monday, more than two weeks removed from a incident on May 25 at Conch House Restaurant where he was accused of punching a security guard; however, Jones-Drew chose to avoid saying much during his meeting with the media.

"Obviously, it's an ongoing investigation and I've been advised not to talk about it," Jones-Drew said. "It's an unfortunate situation. Through my career, I've tried to stay out of the media in that light as a distraction to this team."

Throughout the presser, Jones-Drew reiterated that he couldn't talk about the specifics of the incident, but continued to call it unfortunate as he doesn't want to be a distraction to the team. "I know the team has been busting their butts the last couple weeks," Jones-Drew said. "And I've been trying to do the same thing in Miami."

Without specifics to talk about, the presser instead turned toward questions of Jones-Drew's conditioning, as previous reports during the offseason indicated that he showed up to organized team activities overweight. He commented that he had lost a few pounds in recent weeks and that he recently ran a mile on the beach.

Jones-Drew missed the majority of the 2012 season after suffering a Lisfranc injury against the Oakland Raiders in Week 7 that proved to be season ending. "I don't know if I'll be on the field that day," Jones-Drew said of training camp, "But that's my plan (to be 100 percent)."

In seven seasons with the Jaguars, Jones-Drew has accumulated 7,268 yards rushing and 63 rushing touchdowns, the most in franchise history. He is entering the final year of a five-year contract he signed prior to the 2009 season.

The Maurice Jones-Drew situation does not appear to be going away anytime soon, despite the fact that Jones-Drew's agent claims his client didn't throw the punch. The attorney for Kasim Howard, the security guard Jones-Drew allegedly punched, has issued an official statement on the situation:

"This past Sunday, May 26 during Reggae Sunday at the Conch House Marina Resort, Jacksonville Jaguars [player] Maurice Jones-Drew viciously attacked and severely injured Conch House's security officer, Kasim Howard, 31, of St. Augustine. At the time Mr. Jones-Drew attacked him, Mr. Howard was attempting to protect several female patrons from harassment by members of Mr. Jones-Drew's entourage. Prior to the attack, Mr. Howard never saw, spoke with, let alone confronted Mr. Jones-Drew. Conch House security video captures Mr. Jones-Drew rapidly approaching Mr. Howard from the back-left side and sucker punching him in the jaw. As a result of this attack, Mr. Howard suffered a dislocated jaw and spinal injuries. He was hospitalized, later released and is recovering at home."

The video of the incident surprisingly hasn't become public yet and miraculously no one at the Conch House captured the situation on their cell phones.

Continuing with the release from Gregory Anderson, the security guards attorney, scolds Jones-Drew's camp for trying to diffuse the situation as much ado about nothing:

"The current attempts by some to characterize this as a ‘scuffle' are misleading and unsupported by any evidence. Any fair-minded person watching the video has to conclude that Mr. Jones-Drew initiated an unprovoked attack on Mr. Howard and then literally ran away from the scene. The videos, in addition to virtually all eyewitness accounts, unequivocally prove that Mr. Jones-Drew attacked the security officer without provocation. We are evaluating the remedies available to Mr. Howard, who conducted himself professionally. Mr. Jones-Drew's conduct was deplorable and certainly unbecoming a professional athlete. Those attempting to sanitize this incident are either uninformed or motivated by reasons other than justice."

(h/t Ryan O'Halloran)

Jones-Drew has yet to be charged with anything, but if there is indeed video evidence of the event taking place that shows Jones-Drew "sucker punching" the security guard, there will need to be a lot of back tracking done by the Jaguars running back and his representation, as they definitively claimed he was not involved and left the premises as soon as the scuffle began.

The charge of misdemeanor battery, which is what Jones-Drew could be facing if it proceeds forward, carries a maximum term of one-year in prison if convicted and fines up to $1,000.

It was initially reported earlier on Tuesday afternoon that Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew was charged with misdemeanor battery. The original police report issued by the St. Augustine Police Department noted that Jones-Drew was formally charged with the incident, however that was in error.

Later that afternoon the St. Augustine Police Department issued a revised statement noting that Jones-Drew had not been officially charged, but the investigation was still ongoing.

So how did that get all mucked up?

The wording used in the initial release.

I spoke with a Jacksonville Sherrif's Office officer, who asked to remain unnamed, on the issue.

"What St. Augustine Police Department provided is the copy of the officer's charging affidavit from the incident involving Maurice Jones-Drew. This is the officer's sworn statement of the facts he/she gathered from witness, victims and suspects that causes him to believe a crime has been committed by the suspect(defendant). The officer takes this along with any other reports to the State Attorney's Office (SAO), who will in turn review the case," the JSO officer told Big Cat Country. "If the SAO feels there is sufficient evidence that a crime was committed, they will issue a warrant for the suspect's arrest. This will in turn be officially be signed off by a Judge and a bond will be set for the warrant. The arrest warrant gives officers the probable cause to then arrest the suspect for the crime he/she committed. The suspect will then be formally charged at his first arraigment in front of a Judge."

So essentially, as was corrected in a later release, Jones-Drew has yet to be formally charged. The SAO can also grant or deny any warrant, so it does not necessarily mean one will be issued in the matter.

"So based on what is being put out about MJD, they are probably seeking a warrant for his arrest at this time, he hasn't been formally charged with any crime," the JSO officer told Big Cat Country.

There have been some reports that Jones-Drew's camp does not believe an official arrest is in the works and this is likely to wind up a much ado about nothing type of situation.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have issued a team statement regarding the incident involving running back Maurice Jones-Drew over the weekend where Jones-Drew was charged with misdemeanor battery after allegedly knocking out a security guard.

via Vic Micolucci of WJXT on Twitter:

"We are aware of the situation regarding Maurice Jones-Drew and are in the process of gathering more information. Due to this being a legal matter, we'll have no further comment at this time."

As of now, Jones-Drew has not been arrested for the incident but simply charged with misdemeanor battery. We will have more information on the story as it evolves going forward, but it's doubtful that there will be any punishment from the NFL for the incident, as Jones-Drew has been a "good citizen" during his NFL career thus far.
