Greg Olson's former quarterback in Oakland endorses his hire for the Jaguars, speaks on what he learned.

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Greg Olson as their new offensive coordinator to replace Jedd Fisch and the move was met with mixed reviews, but largely negative reviews. Part of that stemmed from the fact the Olson was on staff for the worst season in Jaguars history but the other part was that he was the offensive coordinator in 2014 for the only offense that ranked lower than the Jaguars.

There were a lot of moving parts and factors that went into that, and we took a look at some of his offenses in the past, but he does come with a ringing endorsement from Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr.

"Being under coach Olson and learning from him, I'll have a protection plan for the rest of my life," Carr told Hays Carlyon of The Florida Times-Union. "Just spending that one year with him. There won't be a look or a pressure that I'll see where I have no clue what to do. I'll know exactly how I want to pick it up and exactly how to pick it up, because of how he taught me and what he taught me."

"Day One, as soon as Blake gets with coach Olson, all they're going to talk about is protection," Carr told Carlyon. "All they'll talk is blitzes."

I don't necessarily know if calling protections was an issue for Bortles, but getting sacked was. Some of it was from free rushers, others were from holding the ball and others were just guys getting beat. The Jaguars gave up 71 sacks total last season, 55 of those were with Bortles at quarterback.

Conversely the Raiders were one of the least sacked teams in the NFL, but they did allow a lot of pressures on the quarterback. This means, as Carr mentions, that Olson taught him how to recognize where pressure is going to come from and how to either fix it, or exploit it. This is something critical for Bortles to be able to do, especially considering his ability on the move.

Bortles and Carr have been friends since after their college careers, often training together and talking back in forth and it seems Carr has nothing but glowing reviews for the Jaguars new offensive coordinator.

"I talked to Blake about him and told him ‘Dude, you got a good one,' because I love coach Olson. He's a friend I'll have for the rest of my life. I think Blake will really enjoy learning from him," Carr said.

The Jaguars were blocked from interviewing Packers quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt.

The Jacksonville Jaguars ended up hiring Greg Olson as their new offensive coordinator to replace the fired Jedd Fisch, but many fans wondered if all the names of the candidates were made public. Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell made mention that some candidates they wanted to interview were blocked from interviewing and now we know one of those names was

Van Pelt has spent the last two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, first as a running backs coach and then as the quarterbacks coach this past season. As La Canfora mentions, Van Pelt seemed to be a hot name on the market as multiple teams were blocked from interviewing him.

The Jaguars hired Greg Olson as their new offensive coordinator officially on Wednesday and Gus Bradley said a few things about him at the Senior Bowl.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made the Greg Olson hire official on Wednesday and it wasn't met with very much fan fare in both the media and with fans. Olson's track record, at least statistically, as an offensive coordinator isn't great but he does seem to have a good record with developing quarterbacks.

Head coach Gus Bradley didn't seemed to be too concerned with statistics when he spoke with the media on Wednesday about the hire.

"I've known him for some time and have really watched his progress and what he's done with quarterbacks," Bradley told Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union. "He's a really good developmental coach and he has a style and conviction. Just like you build a team, you build a coaching staff and I thought he would be a good fit."

Olson, like Marrone, won't make their way to Mobile, AL for the 2015 Senior Bowl and will likely hold introductory press conferences with the media next week. Olson did release a statement through the team, however.

"I want to thank Shad Khan, David Caldwell and Gus Bradley for giving me this opportunity," Olson said. "Gus and I spent a lot of time together over the last week as I learned about his vision and the culture he has established in Jacksonville. It's easy to see that everybody in the organization is moving in the same direction and committed to getting better. We will work diligently as a staff to develop our players and play to their strengths. I'm looking forward to getting started."

Bradley met with Olson for over 16 hours through the course of two days and told reporters that he and Olson shared a vision and that the development of young quarterback Blake Bortles, is front and center. Bradley noted that while the Raiders offense statistically wasn't good, individual players made progress throughout the season, most notably rookie quarterback Derek Carr.

"I know what I saw on tape," Bradley said. "I know what I heard when I talked to other coaches and players [about Olson] and I see the developmental things and his history of working with quarterbacks."

After talking to some people about the Olson hire, the feeling I got from responses and reaction was that Olson was a good coach and worked well with quarterbacks, was only a so-so game day play caller, but tailored the offense to fit the strengths of what he had.

Sometime this week one of our new contributors, Cole Hartley, will debut with a look at some of what Olson did with different quarterbacks over the years, from a film perspective.

The Jaguars hired Greg Olson, who fans should be familiar with, but what's his history as an offensive play caller look like?

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired former Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson for the same position on Wednesday. The hiring, naturally, was met with quite a bit of push back from Jaguars fans, because at Olson's last stop he was the play caller for an offense that ranked just one spot above the Jaguars.

While Olson was given a lot of credit for the success of Derek Carr, the fact that Carr had one of the lowest yards per attempt in recent history gave a lot of fans pause on that idea. To be fair to Olson though, Carr was known for taking a lot of the short easy throws in college and some felt Olson tailored his offense to suit Carr in that regard and to help limit the sacks and hits on the quarterback. Through the years, Olson's offenses have generally had a YPA of 6.5 or higher, outside of seasons where three or more quarterbacks started games.

Here is a quick run down of Olson's history as an offensive coordinator in the NFL:

This doesn't really tell us a whole lot, except for the fact that Olson called plays with a lot of bad quarterbacks during his time in the NFL as an offensive coordinator. He had a few seasons where things looked on the up and up and seemed to do an admirable job the past two seasons with the Raiders given what they had at quarterback and with a rookie QB, but overall there seems to be big variance in performances at each stop.

Olson was the quarterbacks coach for the Jaguars in 2012 and with Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne at the quarterback position the team netted 3,419 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, 17 interceptions with a YPA of 6.3 and an average of 15.9 PPG. Coincidentally, that season was the highest the Jaguars passing offense has ranked since 2010 and statistically Gabbert's best season as a pro. There were also noticeable mechanical improvements in Gabbert's game that season.

The few seasons where there was stability at the quarterback position from one season to the next, the Olson-led offenses seemed to do just fine (Rams 2006, Bucs 2010). In his first season as the Rams offensive coordinator, they became the fourth team in NFL history to boast a 4,000 yard passer, 1,500 yard rusher and two 1,000 yard receivers. In 2010, the Bucs were the youngest team in the NFL and had rookie wide receiver Mike WIlliams lead all rookie receivers in every major category and running back LeGarrette Blount lead all rookie running backs in rushing.

It's also worth noting that Olson was the quarterbacks coach at Purdue while a guy named Drew Brees was under his tutelage, that saw Brees be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy two years in a row as well as winning the Maxwell Award in 2010. He was also the offensive coordinator for Jon Kitna at Central Washington.

I'm not really a huge fan of the hire, but Gus Bradley feels there is something there and made mention in an interview that there were some candidates who might have had good offensive concepts, but were limited by things like bad quarterback play in the past and Olson seems to fall under that category. The signal callers he's worked with haven't exactly been a who's who.

This means that the Jaguars have decided to move on from current offensive line coach George Yarno, who was dealing with cancer last offseason and was not with the team. Head coach Gus Bradley indicated the team would visit with Yarno and determine where they would go from there. Whether the Jaguars decided to move on or Yarno decided to retire, we hope he continues to progress in his battle with cancer.

Marrone has a background working with the offensive line and has been an offensive coordinator previously, spending three seasons under Sean Payton on the New Orleans Saints.

Marrone moved from the Saints to be the head coach of Syracuse in the college ranks, leading the Orange to the most wins in a season they've had since 2001 in 2010, with an 8-5 record. In his final season with the Orange the team had a share of the Big East title and beat West Virginia 38-14 in the Pinstripe Bowl.

As mentioned, Marrone has a wealth of experience in the NFL coaching offensive line, having spent time with the New York Jets (2002-2005), New Orleans Saints (2006-2008) as well as multiple stops in college coaching offensive line and tight ends.
